Instrument Rating
An instrument rating is an advanced certification that allows pilots to fly under instrument flight rules (IFR), which means can navigate and operate an aircraft in a wider range of weather conditions and low visibility situations. To obtain an instrument rating, pilots must complete a specific amount of flight training, which includes both ground school and practical flight experience. This training typically covers topics such navigation, meteorology, and aircraft systems, followed by a check ride with an examiner to demonstrate proficiency in flying solely by reference to instruments. Achieving this enhances a pilot's skills and opens up more opportunities for flying.
Why is an instrument rating important?
An instrument rating is crucial for pilots as it allows them to fly in a wider range of weather conditions. This certification enhances by enabling pilots to navigate and control their aircraft using instruments, rather than solely relying on visual references. With an instrument rating, pilots can access more airports, improve their decision-making skills, and increase their overall flying confidence. Ultimately, obtaining this rating not only broadens a pilot's capabilities but also contributes to safer skies for everyone.
What are the basic requirements to get an instrument rating?
To obtain your instrument rating, you need to meet several basic requirements:
- Hold a valid private pilot certificate.
- Be at least 17 years old
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English Language
- Hold an FAA medical certificate
- Attend and log ground school
These steps will prepare you for flying under instrument rules (IFR) and enhance your flying skills.
**Obtaining an instrument rating for the airplane category requires a minimum of 50 hours of cross country flight time as Pilot in Command (PIC) If you do not have the PIC time, we can help you set up a time building package to help you get the time.
