Reasons to get your pilot’s license:  An incredible sense of accomplishment, flight seeing, efficient transportation, impress your friends and family, gain critical skills that are useful in other areas of life, the pure experience of flight and the possibility of becoming airline pilot.

To be eligible for a private pilot certificate a person must:  Be at least 17 years of age and be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.  Must obtain at least a 3rdClass Medical.

​

The person must receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor or complete a home-study course on aeronautical knowledge.  Also, the person must receive and log ground and flight training from an authorized instructor on areas of aircraft operations.

​

In order to receive an airplane single-engine rating the person must log at least 40 hours of flight time that includes at least 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor and 10 hours of solo flight training.  (FAA Requirement)

The aircraft used is a Cessna 152 (two-seater) - Flight Cost $115.00 @ hour

FAA Certified Flight Instructors - Cost $65.00 @ hour

Ground Instructor 1 on 1 - Cost $65.00 @ hour

 

Based on the FAA minimum flight training required of 40 hours and Sierra’s estimated ground instruction hours the following is the estimated cost:

Dual Flight Hours (C-152) – 30 hours @ $180.00 per hour = $5,400.00

Solo Flight Hours (C-152) – 10 hours @ $115.00 per hour = $1,150.00.

Pre/Post Ground Inst. hours – 15 hours @ $65.00 per hour =      $975.00.

 

Total estimated flight and ground training cost:  $7,675.00*

Application Fee - $150.00 (Non-refundable).

Private Ground classroom hours - 20 hours @ $65.00 per hour = $1,300.00. (Optional)

At least 3nd Class Medical Certificate – Approximately $110.00 (depending on medical examiner).

FAA Knowledge PPL Test - $175.00. 

FAA Practical PPL Test – Approximately $800.00 + Aircraft rental.

*Please note the price is an estimate for a C-152.  Depending on weight and height the student may have to train in a C-172

(4-seat) aircraft which is estimated at $9,675.00.

 

**Please note the national average to get a private pilot certificate is 60 to 65 hours of flight training.  Each person’s ability and availability to fly very.  Any additional flight training cost, use of aircraft cost, or instructor training cost will be the responsibility of the student pilot.
